Church heating in South West

Church heating in Devon

Devon has around 580 Church of England churches, of which roughly 490 are listed buildings (84%). The county falls within the Diocese of Exeter.

Churches in Devon face the same heating decisions as the rest of England but local factors matter: the age and condition of the building, the electricity supply, planning constraints on listed fabric, and which grants apply. A church in Exeter has different practical options from a rural parish church in open countryside.

We cover churches across Devon, from Exeter, Plymouth, Barnstaple, Torquay and Tiverton. Whether you are replacing an old gas system, considering infrared or a heat pump, or starting from scratch, we can help you compare the options for your building.

Heating options for Devon churches

Which system suits a church depends on the building, the budget and how the space is used. These are the options worth considering.

Heating type

Air source heat pumps

Extracts heat from outdoor air and uses it to warm the building through radiators, underfloor pipes, or fan convectors. Runs on electricity.

Biomass boilers

Burns wood pellets, chips, or logs to heat water, which is then circulated through radiators or underfloor pipes. Classed as renewable but not zero-carbon.

Electric panel heaters

Wall-mounted convection heaters that warm the air around them using electric elements. Simple to install and familiar to most people.

Read the guide →Heating type

Gas radiant tube heaters

Overhead tube heaters that burn gas to heat a metal tube, which then radiates warmth downward to people and pews below.

Gas warm-air heating

Blows heated air through ductwork into the building. Common in larger churches from the 1960s onwards, often mounted in a plant room or basement.

Infrared radiant heating

Warms people and surfaces directly rather than heating the whole air volume, which suits tall, draughty church buildings that were never designed to be heated.

Read the guide →Heating type

Pew heaters

Electric heaters mounted beneath or behind pews, warming the congregation directly through convection or infrared radiation. Discreet and silent.

Storage heaters

Charge up with heat overnight using cheaper off-peak electricity, then release it gradually during the day. A familiar technology in domestic settings.

Underfloor heating

Heats the floor slab using either electric elements or hot-water pipes buried beneath the surface, providing gentle warmth from below.
